What is ELV and why is it used in live performance?
Extra-low voltage (ELV) devices are generally considered much safer than mains voltage devices for on-stage use in live performances. Additionally, a number of lighting components that are used for scenery and prop electrics are manufactured as ELV, typically 5V, 12V or 24V, which allows for them to be powered by batteries where portability is needed. The trade-off for ELV lighting, however, is the need for carefully selected parts to ensure that the scenery or prop lighting will perform the way it needs to.
At LX Scene Craft, ELV power sources are capped at a maximum of 25V a.c. or 60V (ripple-free) d.c.
